What It’s Like Living in Buxton, ME
What It’s Like Living in Buxton, ME – A Local Realtor’s Perspective
As a local real estate agent, I’ve had the pleasure of helping clients discover the charm of Buxton, Maine—a quiet, scenic town that offers the perfect blend of rural living and convenient access to nearby cities like Portland, Biddeford, and Saco.
π‘ Small-Town Feel with Big Perks
Buxton is nestled along the Saco River and surrounded by woods, giving it a peaceful, nature-connected atmosphere. Residents love the privacy of spacious lots, the friendliness of neighbors, and the slower pace of life. Despite its rural vibe, Buxton is just a 30-minute drive from Portland, making it ideal for commuters who want a quiet home base.
π² Outdoor Lifestyle
Nature lovers will feel right at home here. Whether it’s hiking and swimming at Salmon Falls or heading to nearby Sebago Lake for boating and fishing, outdoor recreation is a big part of life in Buxton. The town also has several local farms and open land—perfect for those who value space and sustainability.
π¬ A Touch of Hollywood: 'The Shawshank Redemption'
Buxton holds a special place in cinematic history as a pivotal location in the 1994 film The Shawshank Redemption. In the movie, Buxton is portrayed as the site of a significant oak tree and rock wall where the character Red, played by Morgan Freeman, discovers a hidden letter and money left by his friend Andy Dufresne. This heartfelt scene underscores themes of hope and friendship. While the film was set in Maine, much of it was shot in Ohio, and the iconic oak tree was actually located near Malabar Farm State Park in Ohio. Unfortunately, the tree was damaged by storms and eventually removed in 2017.
π️ Real Estate Snapshot
The Buxton housing market offers a range of options, from classic New England colonials to newer builds on multi-acre lots. As of early 2025, the median listing price is around $477,500, with homes ranging from $85K to $650K. Lower property taxes compared to neighboring towns make Buxton an appealing choice for buyers looking for value.
π¨π©π§π¦ Community & Lifestyle
Buxton is known for its family-friendly vibe. It’s a place where kids can walk to their friends’ houses, and neighbors look out for one another. While the town itself is quiet, everything you need—from shopping to entertainment—is just a short drive away.
π ️ Things to Consider
Like many small towns, Buxton doesn’t have a bustling nightlife or major commercial centers. Some residents commute for work, and the local school system has room for improvement. But for those seeking tranquility, space, and a strong sense of community, Buxton is a hidden gem.
